Manastash Road provides a regionally significant east-west connection through the lower county, providing access to logging (both on DNR lands and large private parcels), recreation (USFS lands), ranching and farming areas, and rural residences. The bridge on Manastash had a 28’ deck width (curb to curb) and was 32’ in length. The bridge was constructed in 1940 and rebuilt in 1975.
Bearing pads were showing signs of crushing and splitting, the west footing top was entirely exposed, and the east footing was exposed for 10 feet at the north end. Girders had concrete missing exposed reinforcing steel.. All girders had vertical hairline cracks. With a sufficiency rating of 78.57, the County restricted bridge traffic.
The scope of this project included replacing the bridge with a larger structure (60’ to 80’). This required a minor realignment of the current roadway so that traffic could be maintained during construction. The new structure was constructed adjacent to the existing structure.
