Crane Orchard Rd was established in 1894 for the purpose of accessing ferry landings on the Columbia River. Although the ferry crossings have since been abandoned, the road continues to be an important farm-to-market road connecting grain and fruit producers to markets and shipping centers along the Columbia River.

Crane Orchard Rd was constructed with a thin pavement section that was not able to support the heavy agricultural truck traffic. The pavement was distressed throughout the length of the corridor and required regular high-cost maintenance.

The road section was repaired, thickened, and preleveled and the geometry adjusting along the corridor by Douglas County forces. The improved section was overlaid with HMA by Central Washington Asphalt. Users of the road expressed appreciation for the improvements.
