The Blue Creek road is major arterial that connects the Addy Gifford Road and US 395. It has been an important road throughout its history for commuters between Chewelah and Spokane and has experienced increasing traffic volumes over the years.
The road was only 24 feet wide and had structural deficiencies which caused it to be restricted for long periods of time each spring. There are sections lacking guardrail and sufficient drainage.
Through in-house design and the use of a construction contract, the road was improved to 28 feet wide with cement treated base mixed throughout. Guardrail was added and horizontal and vertical curves improved to increase the safety. The public has expressed positive support for the wider travel lanes and overall safety improvements.
