Sleepy Hollow Road has seen an increase in use as timber lands have transitioned into residential properties. The roadway has transitioned from a seasonal timber haul route to being used year-round. There are portions of the roadway that are impassible when wet and in certain winter weather conditions. This route now serves the residents of this area, including some low income residents, with access to the community resources in the nearby community of Appleton as well as the towns of Klickitat and Lyle.
Sleepy Hollow road currently averages 17 feet in width consisting of a gravel/dirt surface with several vertical and horizontal curves that are below the standard 30 MPH design. The road base is mainly clay and existing drainage is limited or non-existent. The project will widen the road bed from 19 feet to 28 feet and the road surface from 17 feet to 22 feet. The road surface will be upgraded to a BST surface. The existing drainage structures will be upgraded and new drainage structures will be added as needed. Guardrail and/or other safety devices will be added where they are non-existent and warranted. Horizontal and vertical curves will be upgraded to meet current minor collector standards.
