Sundale Road and Old Hwy 8 has experienced an increase in truck traffic. This increase is a result of agricultural crop changes. The historical crops were hay, wheat, and pasturing cattle. These crops are being replaced by grapes for the wine industry.
Sundale Road and Old Hwy 8 are currently an average of 18 wide gravel/ dirt surface road with several horizontal and vertical curves below the standard of 30 mph. The road base is clay. The existing drainage is limited. The project will widen the road bed from 20 feet to 32 feet and widen the road surface from 18 feet to 26 feet. The road surface will be upgraded to a BST surface. The existing drainage structures will be upgraded and new drainage structures will be added where needed. Guardrail and other safety elements will be installed where none exist presently and are warranted. Horizontal and Vertical curves will be upgraded to meet the current minor collector standards
