Independence Road (N Outlook Rd. to Fordyce Rd.), a rural major collector, is a major East-West freight corridor for the northern agricultural areas north of the Cities of Zillah, Granger and Sunnyside, running parallel (north) to Van Belle Road and Interstate 82. This Road segment is classified as a T-3 Freight Route, C-4 Bicycle Route, and (Ag) Tourism Route. The Fordyce-Maple Grove segment of
Independence Road has experienced 18 accidents since 2001 involving 48 people (20 injured). Independence Road is currently configured with two - (11-foot) travel lanes and 3-4 foot gravel shoulders serving 1340 ADT daily, including 8 daily Sunnyside School District bus routes. Fixed
objects (power poles, fencing, vegetation, guardrail) are located on/or within county right of way.

Yakima County will reconstruct 2-lane roadway to 11-ft lane / 4-ft paved shoulder, improve horizontal & vertical alignments, intersection site corners, and traffic control devices, set back fixed objects from edge of right of way, improve storm water facilities and install and/or replace guardrail, where necessary.
