Vail Road SE is classified as an arterial and provides access from parts of southeast county to SR 507 and the City of Yelm. This segment of Vail Road SE ties into previous projects where other segments of the roadway was widened.
The existing road was approximately 20 feet wide with gravel shoulders varying from zero to three feet wide. The limited shoulder posed a safety concern for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. The lack of a paved shoulder resulted in a drop-off at the edge of pavement. Obstructions remained in the clear zone.
The proposed project widened the roadway to 11-foot lanes with 5-foot paved shoulders. Obstructions were removed from the clear zone or modified accordingly with breakaway features.
