North Fork Newaukum River Road was established as a county road in 1909 and the name was later shortened to North Fork Road. It is a Minor Collector that makes an east-west connection between two Major Collector routes (Jackson Hwy & Centralia Alpha Rd). It also serves as a large portion of the travel route to Thousand Trails - Chehalis RV & Camping Resort. Chehalis RV & Camping Resort is a 315 site campground in rural Lewis County and attracts thousands of visitors each year.

The purpose of the project was to reconstruct the roadway by increasing the existing 24' roadway width to meet LAG guidelines. The roadway also had steep slopes, eight horizontal curves that needed to be rebuilt to current standards, and a box culvert and other drainage that required improvement.

The necessary right of way was acquired and the roadway was reconstructed to a width of 30' with recoverable slopes. Also, eight horizontal curve alignments were improved to current design standards, accommodations for storm water were constructed, and safety measures such as: guardrail and flexible guideposts were installed. Positive feedback has included citizens comments on how the added width and other features have increased the safety of the roadway, and how the storm water improvements have improved drainage in the area of the project.
