Ahtanum Road is the only direct route from the City of Yakima to the North Fork and South Fork of Ahtanum Creek. This section of Ahtanum is classified as a Rural Major Collector accounting for nearly 1300 vehicle trips per day and recognized as a T-3 Truck route. Ahtanum road is geographically constrained by waterways to the South and steep hills and rock outcrops to the North resulting in the only viable truck route from the orchards west of the Wiley City community through the Cities of Yakima and Union Gap to the State network of highways. This section of roadway is structurally sound but is showing significant signs of wear to include potholes and cracks. Yakima County will remove a portion of the existing road surface and rejuvenate the roadway with a new top layer of Hot Mix Asphalt.
