The existing Snake River roadway, within the project limits, is a narrow gravel road with sub-standard vertical and horizontal alignment, sub-standard roadbed and sub-standard drainage. The Snake River runs parallel to the existing roadway and presents a hazardous situation as there is no guardrail on this section of roadway and there is a section the roadway the is susceptible to potential seasonal flooding.
The proposed project will improve the roadway geometrics, drainage and reconstruct/widen the roadway to a standard twenty-six (26) feet in width, apply a BST surface, and install guardrail where required and/or needed. All aspects of the reconstruction project will meet or exceed WSDOT standards.
This is Unit B of the original project which has secured Federal funding as match. Preliminary Engineering continued in 2024 with final plans allowing the project to be ready to bid pending construction funding. This project has been in the engineering/design process for a very long time, the County would like to explore all options for funding to help make this project whole and move construction forward.
This roadway is essential to the local area and economy. It is the only roadway to access the destination recreational areas of Hells Canyon and is also the only access for local residents. This project has been "on the books" for a very, very long time and has faced challenges moving forward. Asotin County would like to do what's necessary to help move this project forward and to try and obtain full funding to complete the entire project in a timely manner.
