This road project will improve South Lakeshore Road (94710), classified as a Rural Major Collector, which is located along the south shore of Lake Chelan and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state of Washington. The road is a vital link on the lake’s south shore that serves residential, agricultural, tourism and recreational traffic, and leads to the city of Chelan as well as two state parks: Lake Chelan State Park and Twenty-Five Mile Creek State Park. The project begins at MP 6.00, where State Highway 971 ends at Lake Chelan State Park. The project will continue to MP 6.68.

The project’s primary purpose is to prevent future deterioration of the existing 27-foot wide roadway while widening a half-mile stretch of the road; filling in a gap between the state highway to the south and a county portion to the north that are both 34 feet wide. Improvements will include widening the roadway to match the adjoining road sections, which will provide a safer roadway for not only motorists but also the many bicyclists who travel up the lake individually or participate in one of several recreational biking events held on this road. The project may include some rock blasting.
