Coyan Bridge #200-9.93 was an 84’ three span timber structure constructed in 1955 to span over the Columbia Irrigation District’s Potholes East Canal. The road/bridge allowed direct access from Scooteney Road to SR-17.
The timber structure was first detected with rotting stringers in 2004. In 2017, the County constructed a temporary fix by installing bracing at the west abutment bearing due to major rotting in the 3E timber girder and minor rotting in the stringers adjacent to the 3E girder. The load-restricted Coyan Bridge had a sufficiency rating of 31.9, securing Federal Funds to replace the existing structure.
A single span concrete bridge replaced the existing timber bridge. The new structure is 32’ wide, allowing agricultural implements to cross the canal safe and sound. Also, the profile of the existing roadway was raised 550 ’on both sides of the bridge for a total of 1100’ to mitigate not only an existing site distance, but a section of roadway that historically was an area where vehicles had a difficult time crossing the bridge during icy/snowy conditions.
Local farmers and landowners have enjoyed the new Coyan Bridge. Without load restrictions, trucks now have a direct route between Scooteney Road and SR-17.
