Vail Rd is classed as an arterial and provides access from parts of the southeast county to SR 507 and the City of Yelm. The lack of adequate shoulders has created a safety concern for both motorized and non-motorized users. The road traverses heavily forested areas with large trees in close proximity to the road. Vail Rd has a speed limit of 50 MPH. The design speed will be 50 MPH.
The existing roadway is an asphalt paved surface in fair condition. The lack of a paved shoulder has resulted in a drop-off at the edge of the pavement. The proposed project will reconstruct the existing road base and widening and paving of shoulders.
There are no significant horizontal or vertical curves within the project limits. The proposed widening and removal of obstructions within the clear zone will greatly improve sight distance.
The project will include flattening of ditch foreslopes and stormwater improvements. Hazards within the clear zone will be removed or retrofitted with break-away designs. Utility poles will be relocated to the back of the new ditch line.
