The Sprague Highway Road serves as a significant farm/ranch to market & commercial freight and goods route in SE Lincoln County. It is used extensively for tourism, transport of farm commodities and supplies, commercial goods, surface mining products, and recyclable goods. The road is a direct access to businesses of Mainline Rock and Ballast, BARR Regional Facility, and various farms and ranches. It provides direct access from I-90 to local lakes, resorts, and Columbia Plateau Trail. The road serves as a shortcut for people traveling from Sprague to points west toward Ritzville and east to Whitman and Spokane Counties. Local area lakes and developed trails are a significant tourism draw. The road serves as a mail, school bus and emergency service vehicle route. The roadway is deteriorating rapidly. The horizontal and vertical alignment meet today's design standards. The sub-grade is adequate to support current and future traffic loads, but the surface is deteriorating. Deficiencies are edge cracking, longitudinal, transverse and alligator cracking. Preparing the existing surface and completing an HMA Overlay and Construction Seal would ensure a structurally sound road for many years. Completion of this project will prolong the life of the roadway, improve ride, and enhance safety. Improvements will consist of crack patching , HMA patching and prelevel in preparation for 0.20’ HMA overlay with construction seal, addition of gravel surfacing to shoulders and approaches where necessary, pavement striping, sign and delineation upgrades.
