The project section of Track Road is formarly the main N-S road connecting Yakima with the Cities of Wapato and Toppenish prior to the construction of SR 97. The existing road was 22 feet in width with narrow shoulders. The project was constrained by BNSF railroad right of way on the west and BIA irrigation canals on the east. A PPL Transmission line is on the east in the clear zone. There have been numerous run-off-the-road crashes resulting in fatalities from collision with the power poles. The roadway was widened to 30 feet with 11 foot wide lanes and 4 foot shoulders. The construction process involved full depth recycling, and supplementation of the base materials to arrive at the new profile and cross section. Because of R/W constraints, power poles could not be relocated, and guardrail was installed to re-direct errant vehicles.
